Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of the largest production theatre in French-speaking Switzerland ?

If so, mark Wednesday 30th of January 2013 on your agenda as on this day the Grand Théâtre de Genève will be hosting a free “Journée portes ouvertes” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the theatre’s re-opening.

On this occasion, Geneva’s Grand Théâtre will open the doors of its studio-workshops to the public – what an exciting insight into the secret life of one of Switzerland’s greatest opera-houses !

The Grand Théâtre de Genève is Geneva’s opera house, standing majestically right next to the Musée Rath on Place Neuve.

The “Journée portes ouvertes” will give visitors the unique opportunity to discover the fascinating work that goes on behind the scenes when a big opera production is put together. They’ll be able to learn more about the amazing, but not often celebrated, craftmanship of the theatre’s “bottier(ère)s, tapissier(ère)s et peintres/décorateurs, menuisiers, serruriers, couturier(ère)s, accessoiristes“, who will be demonstrating their skills to the public.

All visits taking place during the “Journée portes ouvertes” will be free of charge (fantastic!) and will last approx. 1 hour. Visits will only be in groups of 10 people maximum and led by a guide. Tours will begin at 9am and the last entry will be at 4pm (guided tours will start approx. every 20 minutes).

Places must be reserved in advance either by phone at + 41 22 418 31 30, online or in person at the Grand Théâtre’s ticket office on place de Neuve 5, 1204 Genève.
